Synthetic-Wig Care Products Do Different Jobs

Short answer: cleanser, rinse-out conditioner, and leave-in do three different jobs. Do not treat them as a mandatory three-step ritual. Start with the problem you are trying to solve, verify the exact wig and product directions, and use only the care step that belongs there.
Choose the job first
If the wig has actual soil, sweat, odor, oil transfer, or product residue, cleansing may be the relevant step. If the fiber is clean but needs a manufacturer-approved finishing or maintenance step, conditioning or leave-in may be relevant. If the real problem is friction, melted fiber, failed knots, missing hair, or structural cap damage, adding another product may not address the cause at all.
What cleanser is for
A synthetic-wig cleanser belongs in the cleaning step: removing appropriate soil and buildup according to the product and wig manufacturer's directions. It is not a repair treatment. If the wig feels rough because the fiber surface is permanently worn, washing may remove residue without restoring the worn surface underneath.
Before cleansing, identify the manufacturer when possible and use the applicable wash method. WigLab does not turn one brand's soak, rinse, timing, or product system into a universal routine for every synthetic wig.
What rinse-out conditioner is for
A rinse-out conditioner is a separate step only when the relevant product system and wig guidance call for it. The word conditioner does not tell you where it belongs, how much to use, or whether it should contact the cap. Fiber lengths and attachment areas are different care zones, especially on lace, monofilament, double-monofilament, and hand-tied constructions.
What leave-in is for
A leave-in is a maintenance tool, not an automatic answer to tangling, static, frizz, stiffness, or every post-wash routine. Those symptoms can come from friction, environment, buildup, handling, or permanent fiber wear. A leave-in only becomes relevant after the cause and the product's validated use case line up.
A simple decision path
Name the problem: dirty, coated, odorous, tangled, static, rough, or simply due for the manufacturer's maintenance step.
Identify the wig: brand/model if possible, fiber type, and cap construction. If those are unknown, use the Unknown Wig path before escalating.
Read the exact product directions. Do not infer use, amount, contact time, or placement from the product category alone.
Use the smallest effective amount for the defined job, then reassess before adding another step.
What not to do
Do not add conditioner or leave-in simply because a wig feels old or rough.
Do not assume more product means more protection; excess can complicate buildup and diagnosis.
Do not saturate lace, knots, or base areas unless the applicable directions support that placement.
Do not use a product step as a substitute for identifying permanent wear or structural damage.
