How to Identify Your Wig's Fiber and Cap Construction

Direct answer
Before choosing a wash method, conditioner placement, heat setting, or repair technique, answer two separate questions: what is the hair fiber, and how is the cap constructed? Fiber controls material limits such as whether manufacturer-approved heat may be used. Construction changes delicate zones, attachment points, handling, product placement, and drying considerations. One does not substitute for the other.
Best evidence first: identify the exact wig
The strongest identification path is documentary, not visual guessing. Look for the manufacturer, model or style name, hang tag, sewn-in care label, original box, receipt, retailer order history, or archived product page. A model name can often resolve both the fiber designation and the cap features more reliably than appearance alone. If you have an exact product record, use it before trying to infer material from touch or shine.
Identify the fiber separately from the brand
A brand can sell more than one synthetic fiber type, so the brand name alone may not answer the heat question. Standard synthetic and heat-friendly synthetic fibers can have different styling limits, and heat-friendly fibers do not share one universal maximum temperature. The useful record is the exact manufacturer designation for the exact wig and the current care instruction attached to it.
Keep product-line names and fiber names straight. Fiber Love is Jon Renau's care-product family, not a fiber. Tru2Life is a HairUWear/Raquel Welch heat-friendly synthetic fiber designation. Misclassifying a care line as a material can send the rest of the care decision in the wrong direction.
What if the label only says “synthetic”?
Treat a generic “synthetic” label as incomplete information, not permission to infer heat tolerance. Do not use heat as a test. Search for the model record or manufacturer guidance. If you cannot verify a heat-friendly designation and a stated limit, the conservative path is to avoid heat escalation while continuing other low-risk identification steps.
Identify the cap construction
Turn the wig inside out and identify the major zones without pulling or stretching them. Wefted areas usually show rows of hair-bearing wefts connected by cap material. Monofilament areas use a fine mesh intended to create a scalp-like appearance and allow individual hair placement. A double monofilament adds a second or additional monofilament layer, commonly creating a different scalp-facing surface; it does not simply mean a larger monofilament area.
A lace front is a front-edge construction feature, not a complete description of the rest of the cap. Hand-tied describes areas where hair is individually attached rather than carried on machine-made wefts. Silk-top-style constructions use layered materials to create a particular scalp effect. A single wig can combine several of these features, so avoid reducing the whole cap to whichever feature is easiest to see.
Why construction matters in care
Construction changes where the wig may be most delicate and where product placement deserves extra attention. Knotted or fine-base areas can require gentler handling than sturdier open-cap zones. Drying support can matter because a wet cap should not be stretched or distorted. Conditioner or leave-in placement may also differ around bases and attachment areas depending on the manufacturer's directions.
What construction does not prove
Construction alone does not establish one universal soak or no-soak rule. Two wigs with superficially similar cap features can still carry different manufacturer instructions because the full product design, materials, fiber, attachment methods, and care products differ. Use construction to identify handling risks; use the exact manufacturer record to resolve the method when possible.
A practical confidence scale
High confidence: exact manufacturer + model + current product/care record. Medium confidence: reliable label or retailer record that names the fiber and construction but the current manufacturer page is not yet found. Low confidence: visual clues only, secondhand description, missing labels, or assumptions based on how the hair feels. The lower the confidence, the more conservative the care decision should become.
Unknown wig fallback
If you cannot identify the brand, model, fiber, or cap with enough confidence, stop treating uncertainty as a blank check.
