Can You Use Heat on a Synthetic Wig?

Short answer
Sometimes—but only after you identify the exact fiber and current manufacturer instructions. 'Synthetic' does not answer the heat question, and 'heat-friendly' does not create one universal temperature. Traditional synthetic, HairUWear Tru2Life, Jon Renau Heat Defiant, other heat-styleable fibers, steam reshaping, blow-drying, and uncontrolled environmental heat are separate decisions.
First, identify the exact fiber
One manufacturer can sell several synthetic fiber systems with different heat rules. HairUWear separates standard synthetic from Tru2Life heat-friendly fiber. Jon Renau separates traditional synthetic from Heat Defiant/heat-friendly fiber. If you know only the brand but not the model/fiber, you still do not have enough information to select a temperature.
Standard synthetic is not heat-friendly synthetic
HairUWear's current care guidance says never to use thermal styling tools on its standard synthetic fiber. Jon Renau's current traditional-synthetic model care likewise says not to blow dry and treats traditional synthetic differently from Heat Defiant. Do not borrow a heat-friendly temperature because the wig 'feels similar.'
HairUWear Tru2Life guidance
HairUWear currently says Tru2Life can be curled, waved, flat-ironed, or blown dry and can withstand low-to-medium heat up to 350°F/180°C. HairUWear also says to use a light mist of its PROTECT spray before heat styling, work in controlled sections, allow the fiber to cool to set, and not heat-style while wearing because the fiber can become very hot.
Keep all of that Tru2Life-scoped. The 350°F/180°C ceiling is not 'the synthetic wig temperature.'
Jon Renau Heat Defiant guidance
Current Jon Renau Heat Defiant model care says HD fiber can withstand heat up to 350°F but recommends working at 270°–280°F with professional-grade digital-temperature tools. The same care sequence calls for its Heat Treat/heat-protectant product by section and a Jon Renau wide-tooth comb. Again, that is Jon Renau HD guidance, not a reason to average 280 and 350 into a new universal number.
Maximum temperature is not working temperature
A fiber's stated upper tolerance can be different from the manufacturer's recommended working range. That distinction is visible in current Jon Renau HD guidance. When a manufacturer gives both, follow the actual technique instructions rather than treating the largest number on the page as a target.
Do not heat-style while wearing unless the maker allows it
HairUWear specifically warns not to heat-style Tru2Life while wearing because heat-friendly fiber gets very hot. Even when another maker does not use that exact sentence, WigLab does not recommend turning the wearer's scalp, ears, face, lace, or attachment system into the test surface for an uncertain heat method. Use the exact manufacturer's setup.
Cap construction still matters
A heat-friendly fiber can sit on delicate lace, hand-tied knots, monofilament, elastic, adhesives, or other base materials with different tolerances. Fiber permission does not mean 'put the hot tool on the lace.' Keep controlled heat and pulling away from delicate construction unless the exact manufacturer method explicitly says otherwise.
What about a blow dryer?
Do not collapse drying and styling into one rule. HairUWear Tru2Life permits blow-drying as a heat-styling technique within its stated system. Jon Renau's current Heat Defiant care, however, says to air dry the piece and says do not blow dry even though the HD fiber itself can be heat-styled later with controlled tools. This is a perfect example of why 'heat-friendly' does not mean every heat technique is approved.
What about steam?
Use Can You Steam a Synthetic Wig? Some current manufacturer guidance uses steam to reshape particular traditional synthetic fibers. Steam is still a heat-based technique and should remain attached to the exact fiber/method instead of being treated as a gentler loophole.
What about ovens, grills, heaters, or hot air?
Use the environmental-heat guide. A controlled tool at a measured setting is not the same as radiant or moving heat from an oven, burner, grill, fireplace, heater, or other uncontrolled source. Heat-friendly does not mean heat-proof.
If the wig already looks heat-damaged
Stop testing it. Fused strands, melted-looking areas, sharp permanent kinks, flattened or distorted fiber after a heat event, or a changed base need the damage path. Adding another pass of heat can turn uncertainty into permanent loss.
If the wig is unknown
No unverified heat. Look for the sewn-in label, box, receipt, model number, retailer record, and current manufacturer page. Do not use a hidden strand as a substitute for identity: a strand test does not reproduce lace, knots, coatings, cap materials, cumulative exposure, or the consequences of damaging the actual style.
What to avoid
Do not use the highest published temperature as your default. Do not copy Tru2Life instructions to Jon Renau HD or vice versa. Do not assume a heat-protectant spray converts traditional synthetic into heat-friendly fiber. Do not assume a heat-styling allowance equals blow-dryer permission. Do not heat an unknown wig to 'see what happens.'
Know the limit
Overheated synthetic fiber can melt, fuse, kink, stretch, or permanently distort. Synthetic fiber does not self-repair. A manufacturer's approved heat technique can reshape compatible fiber; it cannot make the material immune to excessive heat or structural damage.

The decision path
Identify exact model/fiber → identify the exact heat technique → use the maker's working range and product/tool instructions → protect cap and wearer → cool/set as directed → stop if damage appears. Unknown fiber → no unverified heat.
