How to Measure Your Head for a Wig: Circumference, Ear-to-Ear, and Front-to-Back

Wig sizing is a fit question before it is an adjustment-tab question. Measure the head first, then compare those measurements with the exact manufacturer’s current size chart. “Average” is a label, not a universal head measurement.
Use three separate measurements
Circumference measures around the head. Ear-to-ear measures over the top of the head. Front-to-back measures from the front hairline area over the crown toward the nape. Keep the tape snug enough to follow the head without pulling it tight or adding slack.
Prepare the head consistently before measuring
If biological hair is present, keep it smooth and close to the head so bulk does not become part of the measurement by accident. If measurement is being taken before anticipated hair loss, record that context: the fit may change as hair volume changes, so a pre-loss measurement is useful information rather than a guaranteed final size.
Do not turn one number into a universal size
Manufacturers can define petite, average, large, and specialty cap sizes differently. Keep all three measurements, then use the exact brand’s chart. When the dimensions do not land neatly in one size, treat that as a fit decision that may need the manufacturer, retailer, or fitter—not permission to force the cap tighter.
What fit symptoms can tell you after the wig is on
A wig that repeatedly rides or slides upward can be a sizing clue, but slipping has more than one possible cause. Check placement, ear tabs, adjustment tabs, liner or hair bulk, and cap construction before deciding the size is wrong. Pressure, pain, itching, burning, or tenderness is a person-level comfort or scalp question and belongs in the Medical & Sensitive-Scalp route rather than being solved by tightening harder.
The practical sequence
Measure circumference, ear-to-ear, and front-to-back. Record the numbers. Identify the exact brand or model when possible. Compare with that brand’s current chart. Then put the wig on and evaluate position and comfort before reaching for grips, adhesive, or more tension.
