Why “Sulfate-Free” Is Not a Complete Wig-Care Standard

Direct answer
“Sulfate-free” answers one ingredient-category question. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the finished cleanser is intended for synthetic wigs, which fiber it is for, how much to use, whether the wig should be soaked or rinsed under running water, where the product belongs, or how the piece should dry. Treat it as one attribute—not a complete compatibility standard.
A useful real-world example
Jon Renau currently describes Fiber Love Shampoo as a gentle, paraben- and sulfate-free synthetic-hair shampoo. But the same product page also gives the information that actually makes the care decision usable: it is intended for synthetic hair, it uses a small amount, the fiber/base are wet under cool running water, and the directions explicitly say not to scrub or soak. “Sulfate-free” is true there, but it is only one piece of a much larger product-and-method record.
Separate formula attributes from wash method
HairUWear’s current synthetic-care guidance uses its own CLEANSE product with 1 tablespoon in a cool-water basin and a 3–5 minute soak without agitation. Jon Renau’s current Fiber Love directions use running water and no soak. Whatever front-label attributes the products carry, the procedure still comes from the exact manufacturer system. An ingredient claim cannot erase a real method difference.
What sulfate-free cannot prove by itself
It does not establish that a cleanser is compatible with every synthetic fiber or every cap. It does not establish that a formula belongs on lace or hand-tied areas. It does not establish a soak time, dose, rinse method, residue profile, scalp claim, lifespan benefit, or sensitive-scalp benefit. Each of those is a separate claim requiring its own product-specific evidence and scope.
If you are comparing two cleansers
First ask whether each cleanser is clearly intended for the wig/fiber you own. Then compare the full directions: amount, water method, contact time, agitation limits, placement, rinse, and drying. If the exact manufacturer specifies its own care system, that instruction is more useful than choosing between bottles solely on one absence claim.
Unknown wig or unknown formula
Do not use “sulfate-free” as permission to experiment broadly. Identify the wig and use a cleanser with a clear synthetic-wig or manufacturer-supported scope. If the product directions are vague, do not compensate by increasing concentration, soaking longer, scrubbing harder, or spreading the product into delicate base areas.
WigLab formula-claim rule
Future WigLab formula claims should be tied to the finished formula and the exact claim being made. If a WigLab cleanser is sulfate-free, that can be stated as an ingredient/formulation attribute when verified. Claims about residue, mildness, compatibility, scalp comfort, performance, shedding, or lifespan need their own evidence; they should not be inferred from sulfate-free status.
What not to do
Do not call sulfate-free universally gentler or safer without formula-specific evidence. Do not treat it as proof of sensitive-scalp suitability. Do not use it to override the exact manufacturer wash method. Do not turn a true front-label attribute into a clinical, durability, or performance claim the product has not established.
